FIBA-NBA insurance policy rules out NBA European players from June qualifiers

The insurance policy between the two organizations rule that NBA players only have 28 days of insurance for international duties.

Playing to qualify one’s country or playing the actual competition? European NBA players will now have to pick between one of the two since a new insurance policy has been agreed upon between FIBA and the NBA.

Some huge names like Nikola Jokic or Bogdan Bogdanovic could miss the competition as highlighted by Mozzart Sport’s Djordje Matic.

This year, June qualifiers will take place from June 27 to July 5. August qualifiers will be held between August 22 and 30 and the FIBA EuroBasket from September 1 to 18. Therefore NBA stars could possibly join only for August and the main event.

While it’s still possible for players to join their national teams even without insurance, it certainly increases the risk factor, e.g. in case of an injury.

For example, Serbia, which needs to qualify in June, won’t have the likes of its NBA players like Nikola Jokic, Nemanja Bjelica, and Bogdan Bogdanovic.
